Terry Derstine

Founder & Board Chair of Sweatshirt of Hope

For over 50 years, Terry has been an entrepreneur, starting several businesses, but God’s plan was different than he ever imagined. God took Terry on a journey into uncharted waters when his daughter started experiencing severe migraines 37 years ago. Terry and his wife of 56 years visited doctors and emergency rooms regularly, doctors giving his daughter oxycodone like M&M’s. Back in the 90s, doctors did not want anyone to struggle with pain, so the pattern of providing more pills continued week after week. By the age of 22, his daughter was addicted to legal drugs. When doctors and hospitals started tracking pill shopping, they cut his daughter off cold turkey, and his 29-year-old daughter was introduced to heroin.

Outcomes:

On Thanksgiving morning 2013, God gave Terry a clear vision while lying in bed. He visualized his daughter sitting on their front porch step, hood up and zoned out on drugs. That was the beginning of Sweatshirt of Hope. On a beautiful day in 2018, God gave Terry another vision to launch a free community event filled with music, food, and resources for those dealing with life’s struggles. The goal was to bring law enforcement, non-profit organizations, churches, and the business community together to create a healthier, transparent community.
